Expansion vessel for hot water used in central heating systems
What are the signs of my expansion vessel being broken?
When you notice your heating is no longer working optimally, there may be two reasons. Either the pump or expansion vessel is broken.
To find out whether the expansion vessel is broken, refer to the pressure indicator on your central heating system. The pressure is indicated by a manometer, which is generally located near the expansion vessel. The standard pressure on your central heating system is usually around 1.5 to 2 bar.
Should the pressure be lower than 1.5 bar, there is a good chance that your expansion vessel is broken.
What exactly is the cause of an expansion vessel breaking?
An expansion vessel is equipped with a rubber membrane on the inside. Like the pipe, this membrane is pressurised (1.5 - 2 bar). As a result of ageing, general wear or temporary pressure increases, this membrane may tear. If this happens, water and pressure will leak from the membrane. Of course, this does not mean that the water will leak from the expansion vessel itself, but the expansion vessel will nevertheless no longer reach the desired pressure.
Can I replace the expansion vessel myself?
Definitely, this is only a matter of closing the supply tap, unscrewing the current expansion vessel, placing the new expansion vessel and reopening the supply tap.
